Dog Grooming Prices: How to Set Your Rates (And Actually Get Paid)

Pricing is one of the most uncomfortable conversations in grooming. Raise your rates and you worry about losing clients. Keep them too low and you're working 50-hour weeks to barely cover your expenses. Here's how to think about pricing in a way that actually makes sense for your business.

Know Your Costs Before You Set a Single Price

This sounds obvious, but most groomers skip this step. Before you decide what to charge, figure out what it costs you to perform a groom. Add up:

Most mobile groomers find their hard costs run $15–$30 per appointment when you account for everything. That means a $50 groom isn't $50 in your pocket — it might be $20. Once you see those numbers, the idea of charging $90 or $100 for a full groom doesn't feel aggressive. It feels necessary.

What Mobile Groomers Actually Charge

Rates vary by region, but here are reasonable ranges for mobile grooming in most U.S. markets as of 2025:

In high cost-of-living markets (coastal cities, affluent suburbs), rates can run 20–40% higher than these ranges. In rural areas or smaller markets, they might be at the lower end. Research what two or three mobile groomers in your specific area charge before finalizing your list.

Breed Adjustments Are Non-Negotiable

A flat size-based pricing chart will lose you money on certain breeds. Doodles, poodles, and dogs with similar coat types take significantly longer to groom than a Labrador or Boxer of the same weight. A 40-pound Goldendoodle might take you three times as long as a 40-pound Beagle. You need breed-specific or coat-type adjustments in your pricing.

Should You Charge Deposits?

Yes. A deposit policy is one of the most effective things you can do to reduce no-shows and protect your time. Even a 20–25% deposit makes clients significantly more likely to show up — they have skin in the game. It also weeds out clients who aren't serious.

Most groomers collect deposits at booking and apply them toward the final balance. Be clear about your cancellation policy upfront: typical policies require 24–48 hours notice for a full refund, with the deposit forfeited for late cancels or no-shows.

When to Raise Your Rates

You should raise your rates when you're consistently booked out 2+ weeks in advance. That's the market telling you that you're underpriced. A price increase of 10–15% will likely cause you to lose a handful of clients — usually your most difficult and least loyal ones — while keeping your core base intact.

Give existing clients 30 days notice before a rate increase. A simple message like "I'll be adjusting my pricing on [date] to reflect rising costs — here's my new rate card" is all you need. Most reasonable clients understand. The ones who threaten to leave over a $10 increase were probably not your best clients anyway.
